9th Grade Orientation for the 2020-2021 school year

everyone this is Kristy Gabriel or Miss Gabriel I and the Freshman counselor here at back. College Prep High School and I'm going to walk you through the orientation presentation in case you'd like to go over it again or if you missed out on so welcome class of 2024 we are so excited for you to be Bobcats this year we are learning virtually 5 days a week on Monday Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday we're going to follow our normal bell schedule it's from 3:16 p.m. you can find your class schedules on Aspen under schedule and it will show you what you have 1st 2nd. 3rd. And so on at 8 a.m. you will attend your first. Class for 51 minutes virtually you'll get a code to your Google Classroom email from your teacher which shows you how to join your live class you will attend all of first 2nd 3rd and so on until 3:16 freshmen have lunch during third period during lunch from 9:50 to 10:41 you can have this time to eat your lunch go for a walk or just take a nice break you do not need to logs in to a classroom during this time on Fridays we have a different bell schedule which is called advisory Friday you still start at 8 a.m. for your classes are a little bit short can you get out at 2:16 p.m. rather than 3:16 p.m. are advisors Friday you attend a class called advisory which is right after second. Before your third. Lunch this class you can kind of cancer like a homeroom with one or two teachers and a group of students who you will have the same teacher in class with throughout the next four years during advisory teachers will use this time to go for grades answer any questions gthx they will also do fun activities such as team by communicating learning how to be a bobcat doing different social emotional activities in time for you to get some and with your classmates and your advisory teacher so we know the school year is a little bit different this year cuz it's virtual learning so here are our expectations attendance you will attend class everyday starting the Tuesday after Labor Day and you will attend every class virtually no matter if it's math or English or dance or PE it all will be online you will attend every class and every class is important attendance will be taken for every class. Missing one class is equal to missing a half a day missing more than once some more than half a day is considered a full day absence this will be reported through your teacher taking attendance to the office we will possibly notify a parent that you were not in class that day and to figure out what was going this will also be put on your transcript if it was an unexcused absence for example if you just decided to skip class you are attending school so it's not like the spring where maybe you just did some work here in there and a few assignments you are attending school and everything will kind of be graded as it normally is live lessons every day that you can access to your Google classroom and through Google meets with your teacher in class great this isn't normal grading scale it isn't perhaps in junior high or middle school you were doing Catherine complete or not getting grades this isn't normal grading scale for this virtual learning of the school year so you will get the MF so it will not be any more incomplete so I just passed be given complete or completed work not completing work you're at risk for receiving a zero and risk for failing the course this can actually really affect you if you do receive a zero or a poor grade this will go on your transcript Wichita as well I know you're only freshmen but this is something to think about right now at this point your grades and the beginning of freshman year and go all the way with you to college into getting into college so you try your best now an active student you do have to be present in class we would like you to call to have Chromebooks it has to have a camera on your computer if you got a Chromebook from school or have your own you will the camera you're going to join Google classroom for each class on time so you're not marked RT you have to check your email your CTS email and respond to emails from teachers and staff at school you need to start using your CPS email to communicate you shouldn't be using a Gmail anymore or an iCloud or a Yahoo it needs to be your CPS email so that it's organized we also ask that you write your username password down so that you don't lose it during this time we also asked you to communicate communicate with your teachers if something is going on you know you're not feeling well there's an emergency in a family or if you just don't understand a topic what's really going to help you this year is if you are communicating make sure that you're open-minded it is a little bit different this year like I said with virtual learning but be open-minded you know it's it's really tough for everyone so try to go in it with a positive atom dude and learn to adjust a little bit to Virtual learning we also asked you to not use an avatar when you are on camera class that will not be acceptable we need to see your face see that you're sitting up you know nothing bad what's your covers on or not just having your computer on but away from it I mean you need to be present in front of the camera also we also suggest that you're you know like I said dress appropriately not in PJs are inappropriate clothing so you don't look presentable a little bit for your classes and I'm sure all the teachers are looking forward to seeing you so we have some tips for virtual learner we suggest that you have a job meet at area for school work she's a quiet area that allows you to be comfortable Focus have privacy choose an area that has a desk a table or a counter with a comfy chair and proper lighting so that your teacher since this is going to be important for you in order for you to be productive and a focus you also ask that you make sure you have the proper materials keep your area stocked with supplies such as your computer charger phone water smacks any pencils or anything other supplies you may need if you have not picked up a Chromebook yet you can pick one up this Friday between the hours of 9 and 12 p.m. at the high school they're also having novels for certain English classes that you might need for the school year feel free to pick those up as well another tip is to stay organized create a calendar whether it's on paper or a planner or on your computer I organized the time your classes on time complete assignments in a timely manner try to labeled physical folders with paper or electronic folders on your computer to keep materials in a station organized spot for each class cheap subject in its own folder so that they don't get mixed up and lost use your resources at Back of the Yards College Prep High School we have a lot of resources connect with your teachers your counsel other support staff to make connections and ask for help or hangouts after school this will help you know if you want to talk to some friends during or after talk about some subjects and study Funeral Home worker or quizzes start coming check the school website for CPS email in Google classrooms daily this is crucial that you are on top of things most importantly try to say paw change to be difficult staying positive is going to help you accomplish your goals everything you learn this year is going to help you grow and you will get through this all of us are here for you to help in any way that you need there are some positives of virtual learning I think we can all agree that it's nice to have a short commute to school maybe just from your bed to your desk or your bed to the kitchen table you also have a short commute home after a long day if a greater Trinity to strengthen your organization of time and space it's kind of in your own area so you can control where you put your things and how you want to organize them the future of work is looking more and more like e-learning a lot of careers are offering a dog with flexibility to work from home especially during this time with illnesses going around a lot of careers might have people working from home in the future more often a lot of careers also have you working on the computer all day might help you get prepared you're more flexibility to me with your teachers your counselors and you study groups Leslie if you're wondering what college is like right now it's kind of like this to most colleges are doing virtual learning so you're getting yourself prepared and ahead of the game for when you're on computers for many hours of the day when you're in college how to can help you communicate with your teeth Schurz advocate for asked if you need help set up a study time or meeting we can help you with organization and time management we can also help you with study skills and goal setting another area that we help students and his College and Career Readiness might think it's a little bit too early to think about College and Career right now but it's going to come up really fast make sure you research sorry about that we will have to research throughout your four years here will help you look at different colleges careers Will Go On Virtual Field Trips this year to some colleges will use websites like college board and Khan Academy who helped you when the time comes with financial aid and scholarships we can help you select careers colleges and plan for your future the last area we like to help students and its social emotional support right now in the there's a lot going on as you may see on the news we are all here to help you whether it's an individual counseling sessions group sessions or psychoeducation we are free to meet with you during the school day you know me give me some guidance and help psychoeducation means that we as counselors might come into your classroom lesson on a certain Topic in all of these ways so you don't that Back of the Yards College Prep High School is an IB School as a freshman student is important to learn but as you can see the little Globe puzzle on the left there's an IB learner profile and IB student is knowledge of the Risk Takers their communicator are balance thinkers principled open-minded inquires reflective and caring we hope that all of you are profile during these next four years freshman that's a term which is a little bit more in the winter or going to work on something called an interdisciplinary project which is a part of being an IB myp student the topic will be Global context globalization and sustainability and World language and English you'll work on Project related to mythology and translation and heroes of sustainability in math science and social studies you'll do a project on the human impact on the environment if you have you can reach out to important to success in high school if your parent is has a parent portal and ask them if they can do your assignments and due dates they can help you be accountable for things you need to turn in they can create alerts and notifications to see why grades are either Rising falling whether you're tardy absent or on time parents can help improve attendance I'm students whose parents are on Aspen higher grades in Improvement for more advanced courses the only thing to get your parents set up for parent portal is a valid email contact for your parent or Guardian with our school you can send me your email address and we can get them set up with only to create airport on Aspen then once they have once you're registered with Parent Portal they can access through the parent portal login page
