IB LEARNERS OF THE MONTH- Oscar, Kaniya, Emily and Alejandro!

Congratulations to the January IB Learners of the Month! This month's IB learner profile characteristic is balance. The winners this month displayed the importance of balancing the intellectual, physical, and emotional aspects of their lives to achieve well-being.

Oscar Bonilla, Junior
Nominated by Mr. Brasher
Oscar Bonilla has been a dedicated member of the varsity basketball team. This is his first year playing basketball at BOYCP but he is quickly learning and improving his skills as a ball handler and defender. He is reliable and consistent in his positive attitude. He is also a captain of the boys volleyball team. Oscar is a born leader and a great student!

Kaniya McCollum, Junior
Nominated by Mx. Zein
Kaniya McCollum is the rare student who not only challenges herself at every opportunity but also understands the importance of rest and taking breaks from an intense course load. Kaniya has shared that she does not have a computer at home, which means she must complete all assignments for her DP courses while she is at school. I think that due to her involvement in flag football and her lack of computer access at home, Kaniya has had to strike a delicate balance between hyperfocus at school, exercise with flag football, and rest at home. In my opinion, she has succeeded in striking this balance. What's more, Kaniya has also flourished in her Young Adult Literature class, not necessarily because of the way I teach the course, but rather because she understands it's a class where she can read between the lines, take her time with analysis, and ask questions based on her interests. To me, she embodies the IB's definition of "balanced" and has continuously achieved a level of emotional wellness that I have not seen often in DP students at our school.

Emily Gonzalez, Junior
Nominated by Ms. Maxwell
Emily is a full DP student, captain of the flag football team, and a member of the varsity girls' basketball team. Emily always works hard in the classroom and on the field/court. She holds herself accountable for her actions and is supportive of her teammates.

Alejandro Medina, Senior
Nominated by Mr. Khairallah
Alex demonstrates balance as a leader in the classroom and a senior member of the swim team. In class, Alex demonstrates emotional maturity and leadership through his work and contributions to class discussions. Academically, Alex pushes himself to excel and consistently exceeds expectations in class. Emotionally, Alex is authentic and grounded in a way that welcomes others to be themselves and feel comfortable sharing their perspectives. Overall, Alex is a great student and valued member of our school community.
TEACHER OF THE MONTH- MS. LOPEZ Image

TEACHER OF THE MONTH- MS. LOPEZ

Congratulations to Ms. Lopez for being nominated as Teacher of the Month for March!

Ms. Lopez is an incredible co-teacher! She gets to know students so well by talking to every student each day, getting to know their interests, and even reading and watching the things students recommend to her. She ensures that every single one of her students succeeds to their highest potential, setting high expectations with her warm presence in the classroom.

Ms. Lopez consistently advocates for students and colleagues, and she's always learning something new - whether it's new parts of her role as a DL teacher taking classes to support bilingual students, or creating new lessons based on students' interests. She regularly translates for colleagues, and she always has great ideas for activities that help students develop both academic and socio-emotional skills.

Thanks for all you do Ms. Lopez! Congratulations!
