good morning class of 2021 welcome welcome to your senior year we're really proud of you really happy for you I know this is unlike any other probably senior year that I've encountered in my life but you know it doesn't take away from the fact that you guys have made it to senior year and we just want to shut up I said congratulations and welcome okay within this get started with our orientation just go over some expectation that we have for you during this virtual time virtual learning that we have as well as the expectation for college Delfino this is great Courtney year when we talk about what's going to happen after post-secondary and so we want to get you started on the right foot you know we have mrs. Lee and myself missed your wanting this, that's where all are going to be here to support you in so we want to go over some of those College expectations as well so let's get started so for one of the things that we wanted to cover with school expectations for virtually you know and one of those things that I know we always talk about attendance and how important and it says and more and even now more than ever attendance is going to be very important so just to remind you you are attending school you will be attending school every day so every day and every classes and attendance will be taken for every class. Missing one class is equal to missing half a day and then as well as if you miss two days you just like missing the whole the whole day so it's very important that you're there everyday in class you access a Google me to make sure that your present to show the teacher that your present we want you to maintain at least 93% attendance through May 31st 2021 so you can meet those senior activities like luncheon and prom graduation just know that 12 or more excused or unexcused absences will result in exclusion from senior events so given the dishes and if here we don't want you to miss out on this important items Susan very important that you attend class everyday make sure that your present everyday and then lastly is 90% of 10 minutes to walk the graduation in terms of against this year is not not like any other and so we know it's very important to get started on the right foot and unlike like spring this year this fall going to be completely different in terms of grades and how and how class work is going to count so this your teachers will have live lessons every day we are returning to the normal grading scale so there's going to be no more pass or incomplete Let It Go you're going to be given for completed work not completing your work though you reschedule receiving a zero and then the risk of failing the course so if you you know that's not the worst thing that you can do is not complete your work so please make sure that you do you you you do your best thing to complete your work and then lastly if you received an incomplete or an eye for second semester and last dream you need to make up there with that class so please meet with me email let me know Mister Selena save I got an incomplete from mice second semester last year so we can register you for evening School like last year where that you can do somewhere and get credit for it this year is going to be completely different so we want you to be present please do not use an avatar when you join on your Google me if you want we want you to show your teacher that your present you're there do I need to be in your classes daily in a being in your class today to you're going to show your teachers that you're invested in care about your learning now that you want to be there and you know how important we want you to join your Google classroom breach of your classes do I need to actively participate in large or small group learning including interactive activities that your teachers were organized for you you know if it's something new for everyone this year I know a lot of teachers are are nervous and want to make sure that they do the best for you and so doing that you have to be active you have to participate so we're asking you to actively participate in whatever activities at the teaching like one keeping that we probably going to hear over and over for myself and this is Liam is Cox or mr. twani or probably even all your teachers is you need to check your email for the more important you need to respond to emails that are sent directly to you from teacher understand a lot of universities or colleges are communicating via email this year and if it's increased from the previous years in the past so it's it's very important that you need to check your emails daily and to make sure that there's nothing that you're missing out we want you to be a communicator we want you to communicate we want you to advocate for yourself you know something's not working or if you feel lost if you you're just missing something I think it's very important that you that you need to advocate for yourself and you need to stay with the Salinas in math this is where I'm struggling in Mississippi missing in English this in my struggle or even go to the teacher and just let them know how it's it wasn't in your password in the classroom when you can go talk to them this year is going to fall on you to try to actively advocating and talk and send emails to your teachers and let them know this is this is where I might need help with this is what I'm doing wrong and then last thing you want me to be open-minded I know this is not it's not easy for you it's time I know it wouldn't be easy for me to be honest to be at home trying to do class everyday but we want you to what to do with an open mind thinking Pinoy this is the best that can happen for right now this is these are the circumstances that were in but we need you to be open minded we need you to be active if you need you to be there every day to be present what's it going to take me just going to be something that we're going to talk about a lot this year and just for you to be present and being there and making sure that you're participating and because we know that this is not the easiest thing in terms of a virtual learning we we in terms of how you can be a successful virtual learning one of those do we have a designated area for school work you know because we are at home and and sometimes you have your younger siblings we have older siblings parents sometimes it can be difficult to try to find a quiet space but just try to find a quiet area that allows you to be comfortable focus and have privacy last you and I was having meetings with seniors I have three children of my own and a lot of times when you see me on the computer they always want to come see y'all what's going on and so you know last year I chose a spot in the kitchen where it was literally I was on my left side was the window behind me was a wall it's already hard to get access to me and said that that helped me just the focus and have this conversation with seniors about where were they going next year but then you know and then also choose an area that has a desk table a counter comfortable chair proper lighting don't use your bad do not do it at me no do not attend class in your in your pajamas in and make sure that you're ready for school you know I think that'll help you get get that mindset and get that Focus make sure you have your proper materials keep your keep your area stocked with supplies and seizures charge your headphones water snacks you know whatever you might need for that class so this week you're ready just like you would be in the car they were going to create a calendar to stay Oregon esthetician classes on time complete assignment to the timely manner you can label your physical folders electronic folders whatever you have to keep materials in a safe organized spot it's going to be pretty crucial for you to stay organized during this time just because you know this is there going to be a lot from home and doing your own things and it's easy to lose things so you know we had to create a calendar stay organized make sure that you think classes of time use your resources I highly recommend this perfectly since we are we are in this virtual learning world so connect the teachers counselors support staff to make connection desperate help again reiterating the whole advocate for yourself what classmates great study group lunch groups Hangouts after school you know everyone's in this right everyone everyone that's that's doing school this year is in this virtual world so maybe create a Google Hangout or Google during lunch you can talk to your friends and you guys can just hang out and just have fun the last also want to plug your website we have a new school website to check the school website for information and we have information about remote learning check your email and then go and then lastly stay positive change can be difficult but staying positive can help you accomplish your goals so everything you learned will help you grow and get through today so stay positive we're here to help but never forget that you're not alone in this week we are but we do want you to stay positive it's not easy sometimes and when you need that that Assistance or you need a boost send me an email to come talk to me or try to make sure that we have everything you need some positives of these learning since we're talking about staying positive first one is too short commute to school you know I think it'll be there should be no tardies this year to be honest with you and it's really simple to get to on time so just think about that one is greater at all so it's a great opportunity to strengthen your organization of space and time you know I've never been the best organizer but I think as they grow older. add more experience with the try to get each other in an approved and so one thing that you can capitalize being that you'd only 17 or 18. This is an opportunity to strengthen your organization another key fact and I think one of the things that that we learned this year no not a lot of unfortunately there there have been there has been an increasing and unemployment for some of our families and you know any way we think about the future work you know it's looking more like eLearning you know it is going to be helpful and then some careers are even offering the ducks with that flexibility to work from home and so thankfully I was lucky enough where I could work I could work from home without the fear of losing their job and there are some other opportunities are other careers that they will let you work from home I have a friend that works in some firm downtown and he's been allowed to work from home and they let him work from home daily if you want so it's also it might be some type of career opportunity for you is the more and more you become comfortable with this virtual learning that you do have the ability to be flexible and Suites in when workers work from home so that's a great opportunity it allows you more flexibility to meet with teachers counselors and study groups and then also you if you want to know what colleges might be like next year if you know they're going through the same thing right now Oliver turn seniors that are off College are doing virtual learning as well and then The Last Ship last positive it will be a short commute home after a long day we know who's going to seven and classes on the computers going to be rather link Longview and could be tiring and thankfully as soon as you're done you could cause your computer and then relax at home so what what can counselors do for how can counselors help you you know as always with your for the academic support communicate with teachers who can help with your organization and time management you can try to improve your study skills and goals setting we have the college career Readiness and we have to research goal-setting financial aid scholarships help you with your selectivity as well as future planning and I think one of the things that I don't want anyone to forget is that we're off with your for that social emotional support doing virtual learning on your own to be very stressful and overwhelming so you remind you that we're here to help you and we can have individual sessions we're looking to start some groups we can do some psycho-education but it's really important to know that we're here to support you we want to talk about your are post-secondary senior expectations as we start to senior year and let me start this fall quarter or quarter is typically the time that we start looking to apply to schools and looking for private colleges and so mean some goals for for our seniors for example we wanted to complete five college applications many River students use the common application and we'll go over that do seminars and she okay to yes starting October 1st start talking about financial aid that's the first day that we can officially apply for federal student aid or the FAFSA which I'm sure you will hear probably in your first couple of weeks in school we're going to talk about the staff so this is their application that we still allowed to see what what type of federal student aid would you be eligible for and then this is the information that colleges used to determine how many what type of scholarships or how much money either have to offer you as well in the fall we also asked me to request letters of recommendation so I recommendation for now with you to start thinking about teachers that your you be interested to to write a letter of recommendation and we also asked you to create a profile on academic work which is the scholarship database for CPS students and so that's one of them definitely database that we highlight and I know some of you might hear about fastweb stay away from fast when we definitely want but then you also have college Greenlight and going merry you try to have it then you know the one I went to meetings with you guys to to make sure that we start building your college list and we have a strong College list for you to start applying to and then in the spring we have looking around February we have a whole of full parent meeting with seniors to talk about what's coming in from the financial aid because that's when you typically signal Financial a letter and starting like around March 1st to start having individual has to go over the financial aid fees with your parents and let them know how much money does school is offering for you and what would you have to pay I know you guys have seen this truck before it's the GPA in college selectivity chart part of the challenge this year would be that you don't typically we don't have an SAT score as of yet I know we have the number of how to sign up for the September 23rd day we will also have another for the remaining students to take it on October 27th so you will officially have an SAT score for you by the middle of November but we know you was going to go over this tried as well during seminar TPS and T okay but just also just a good reminder of just seeing it again in terms of the FAFSA timeline in September what we typically do is beat FSA ID which is essentially serves as your signature back in my time when I was a high school student going faster you was a paper application you never sign it now everything's digital everything's for the web so after is your signature proving that this is who you are and then you if you complete your FAFSA in October we file your FAFSA with your your parents 2019 tax information so you can bring in your 1040 if they've been amended 40x Denny's W2 or 1099 if the type to have a private business or your own business or they work for themselves to build a 1099 in January through March. We go through a process called verification this is where it was when we talked about emails this is where you get school emails from school saying all we need this paper work for me this paperwork so that's why I grandfathered to get in the habit of looking at your emails right now because we do but a lot of our stew go to the process of verification and it's time to say that you were lying on the faster for the system processes that every for the most part every student goes through and they just want more proof of that this is the income that your parents have Island in April you can March and April review your financial aid letters with you along with your parents and then May 1st is when you pay your deposit to the university that you choose and that should reserve your spot in terms of the the college app stations in the college process to post-secondary for the most part of September we do a lot of the college research he asked you to revise your personal statement for those that haven't started I would recommend highly that you start thinking about what going to write your personal statement we request letters of recommendation we ask you when you do request letter of recommendation from a teacher you will get always want to present them with what they call a fraction just a minute more information about you that you might want to eat should know so they can expand on it in their letter recommendation in October we typically start applying to colleges we file the FAFSA if if it's a if you're eligible for the fact that you're not we we have you keep the Riser which is for the state of Illinois to receive a state Grant of $5 by $5,400 so those are four students were undocumented so we either father facts first student that that have a Social Security number or a resident of the United States and if not then we complete the Rights Act in November we will try to apply to at least three colleges so we just want to make sure that when we apply November that you pay attention to the early action and early decision early action simply means that you're just applying early so you can hear so you can get a response earlier than what the typical response would be in February or March early decision however is more of a contract expire so you're saying if I apply early decision this is the school. I'm going to go to if I if I'm accepted it so it's just we want to give you more flexibility in options that end in December we apply to at least two more college so that would beautify your your fight schools but then also if we can complete our five application before break in December then you can at hopefully have a restful break and I think that's that's very important perfectly in your senior year goes by pretty quickly just want to remind you every every seniors at graduation CPS has to complete the learn plan succeed so that's where you meet with either myself mrs. Lee to go over there fanfic seeds do you have a number of Pathways we asked if it could be completed by May 15th so it's either you going to enroll in the 4-year University in are in a row in a 3-year program or a trade school or a city college some of you might say I know I want to take a year off I'm going to take a gap year for the Gap year is NASA is more of a program so it's not in that you have to enroll in the Gap year programs do you need to apply in Philadelphia program can't say I'm going to take a year off just a quick highlight you have your programs are really expensive or can be expensive and so we want to make sure that if you are planning to do the Gap year that you meet with either myself or misses me prior to the siding that that's what you want to do or is you might say I will I'm going to work I'm going to I'm going to take I want to do it now and I'm going to have a job and but you just can't say I have a job you need to have a place that you work at and then sometimes you might be working at the same place you working at now which is fine you just need to show us some type of proof or if you can if you have a company that's going to hire you right after high school that we would ask you for letter of proof that that they're going to hire you and then lastly there is the option to join the military with those students that are interested in the military that would be an option with a letter of acceptance from military branch typically we will give students what they call a senior passport that has essentially the timeline that we just went over in terms of their college applications which of the FAFSA this year because you will not be in you cannot create a digital seen your passport and so it's a timeline for college applications and financial aid it helps you organize some of your materials in your thoughts and lost your check the progress of your application of financial aid we're going to shut you know we're going to share it with you so they can be shared with myself mrs. Lee and mrs. show on E because this is your senior year and you want to make sure that you start strong and you finish strong betrayed a senior contract currently is being finalized and it's going to be given out during the senior parent meeting in the fall, I'm going to highlight some of the senior contract that we have for you example of students must pass all the classes during semester 1 and be passing the passing grade during great during quarter 3 to attend prom ticket or luncheon you know we know those three words but we want to make sure that you dress for the journey rewards and so we want you to 2 when you come to the school as a senior that you know these are expectations for you and I'm sure you guys can meet them it's just a matter of doing it and so and we're there to support you to help you do that we wanted take off finals final exams for both semesters pass all classes once again as we highlighted in attendance forever more excused or unexcused absences the resulting explosion some senior events your 90% attendance to walk a grudge any senior having a level 426 disciplinary infractions on record during the 2021 school year may be excluded from participation in graduation, senior activities once again not that we want to highlight the negative for just that we know that for that you guys are going to be fine right just so you know we stay away from doing any type of infraction that might be a level 46 out that that would result in you now but if you do what you've been doing going to school at 10 you class doing your work you will be fine and then seniors without fee waivers are encouraged to make payments towards their fees temps and temp IDs going to try to get you that information to you maybe by the end of act by me by the end of September to get an idea of how much money that you owe the school and then lastly a lot of information that we like to pass out we have a Google classroom for the class of 2021 that Mr Avila started last year the code is right there it's d e k z txn to make sure that you join a Google classroom cuz we like to highlight scholarships different opportunities that might be coming for seniors and so we want to make sure that you get take advantage of that and then lastly just the Flickr website is www.secu.org it has a different remote learning it from a remote learning opportunities has contact information for anyone that you would want to get in contact with you in case you forgot your email address but so that's you know that's another resource that you can chat what is it that is a presentation for a senior orientation once again I would like to highlight that congratulations you are a senior and we're looking forward to this year and we're looking forward for you to have a successful last year
