The 2020-2021 school year starts on Tuesday, September 8. I can't wait to learn with you soon!
About Kerith Asma
Hello! My name is Kerith Asma, and I have been teaching in Chicago since 2013. I've taught English and literacy classes to all levels of high school; I've also taught college writing at the University of Chicago. This is my 4th year at BOYCP, and I'm so excited for the 2020-21 school year because I love working with our incredible students and families. I teach English 4 and Creative Writing, and I co-sponsor two clubs: Dream Pursuers and Run Club.

As an educator, my pedagogy is rooted in two goals: give students tools and strategies for surviving under late capitalism, and create experiences that help students live joyfully as their fullest selves. I believe that Black lives matter. I believe that no one is illegal. I believe all humans deserve dignity and compassion. I believe in the power of community to make change, and I believe in the power of literature to help us envision and create that future. I’m white, and growing up, I attended predominantly white schools that rarely presented a range of perspectives and voices. I am still working to unlearn all the ways racism has manifested in my thoughts and actions. My hope is that each day I do a little better, and that my teaching creates opportunities for my students to see the vast complexity and beauty of human experience, including their own.
Outside the classroom, you'll find me reading science fiction and comics, playing videogames on the Switch, and going for walks in Chicago's parks and forest preserves. I live with my partner of 8 years in Humboldt
