Due:
You will receive a 60% D on the final (30/50) for completing the freewrite. That's not great, but better than nothing.
I fully expect you to finish a draft by the end of finals to receive an A or B on this draft.
You should all get an A, so it's worth sending to any college next year.

Rubric:
20: I complete the whole paragraph. It has a claim, and at least two pieces of evidence and reasoning. It is relevant to the poem I chose. The pattern looks like the writer put some thought into it (it's specific) and has looked back at the poem multiple times. It is not vague, like the description below.
16: I complete the whole paragraph, but the pattern is vague and the evidence is redundant. For example, I just write, there is an onion being repeated, and the quotes are simply the lines that have the word "onion."
14: I partially complete the whole paragraph.

Because this story is longer, jammotations were a no-go.
We are going to learn about the Kami extension! You'll love it.
Upload and submit your Kami annotations on here by Thursday's asynch day.
Remember to annotate: ANYTHING that strikes you as interesting or surprising!
*Reminder to mark patterns if you see them.
*Reminder to TAKE CONTROL over your own reading by marking spots that you find confusion. No panic, take control.
Rubric:
18-20: Completed and shows active engagement (I noticed lots of stuff)
16: Completed and shows compliant engagement (I did it. Check.)
14: Partially complete, but over half. (I didn't finish)
10: Incomplete. (I didn't try)

"Daydreams" Discussion Post the following two things in one post: **List out a pattern. (Show, in quotes, where the author mentions something more than once or a discrepancy.) **Then flip it into a question.
15 points total: 5 points for yours, 5 for both times you answer someone else.
POST (tips):
A student in this class once told me this advice: "The author gives you an open door that allows you to go slowly into the main idea. The author will mention it more than once, or indirectly mention it more than once." Think of patterns that way.
Example post:
The narrator repeats a kind of sentence on the first page. “My memories come in negative” and “My memories compete with reality.” Why does he write the first two paragraphs starting with similar sentences, that are kind of different?
---
ANSWER:
Try to answer the question with these three questions in mind:
**Am I speculating, predicting, or interpreting? Name it in your answer! Write, “I speculate that...” etc.
**How is this pattern important to something or someone in the story?
**If I don’t have an answer, can I add another quotation to the pattern they posted?
Answer at least 2 other people’s questions or add to two other people’s discussions. The more you involve yourself, the more you will get out of this.

In your journal, answer these two questions. I'm expecting at least a paragraph for each question--or more!
1. What is your honest assessment of your academic life first semester? (And if you want, your personal life.)
2. What is one change you will make in your routine or thinking to start second semester well and end junior year strong? Be thoughtful--I mean it! Don’t write a pat answer here.

When students feel overwhelmed, they will follow the order of color coating. For example, finish the "blue section" before trying the "pink section."
Some students will work together (please email me if you have a partner) and some students will work alone for a video option. I will show you how to use Loom next week.
If in doubt, start with annotations. If you can't find a pattern, go back and read. Make more annotations. Patterns POP out at you when you annotate.

Jammotations: Both stories "Hanging Gardens" and "Half Sleep" are on the same Jamboard. CHOOSE ONE.
I have also attached a PDF of both stories. If you want to use a technology called "ilovepdf.com," I will demonstrate in class.
ANNOTATIONS: READ WITH A PENCIL/MOUSE.
20 points. It's worth double the usual points because this stage is so important. It trains your eyes to SEE.

-2 minutes: Choose your “best similarity” and the writer will write it into the Nearpod immediately when they return.
I will call you back after 20 minutes. If you are finished, look for discrepancies.
