Social Media Log Reflection in Google Classroom

Social Media Log Reflection

In The Social Dilemma we watch as the director creatively uses three puppeteers that collaborate to manipulate users. The three puppeteers engage in conversation as they figure out how to “lure” users back to their screens. In one scene, they use pictures of an ex-girlfriend posted to social media in order to get the teenage boy back to using his phone.

Over the past few weeks, you have tracked your own internet usage. It is now time to look at your log and provide analysis over what your screen usage says about you and what your puppeteers are saying about you behind your screen.

Your writing (minimum 200 words) should be broken into three sections, exploring the following:
Reflective thinking: What trends have you noticed in your screen usage? Do you look at specific apps during particular times of the day? What particular apps do you use the most? Least? Are there any consistencies in content?
Analysis: Describe your overall reaction to the findings of your log. Do you believe that it gave an accurate portrayal of your screen behavior? Did your findings surprise you and/or did you learn something about yourself when it comes to your usage? What conclusions or realizations did you come to after analyzing your screen behaviors?
Drawing connections: Describe one specific time over the course of the last few weeks in which you felt manipulated by your 3 puppeteers behind your screen. What steps did they take in order to reel you in? Why do you think they did this? Were you self aware during the manipulation and went along complicitly, or was it something you have now realized after the fact? What would you do differently or the same in the future?
If you don’t believe this has happened, please write your own mini-counterargument to the documentary.

Internet Usage/Social Media Log in Google Classroom

Internet Usage/Social Media Log

Over the next week or so, we will be individually tracking our social media and internet usage. From Instagram to TikTok to shopping on Amazon or playing Xbox Live, our time spent on social media or the internet has skyrocketed since the outbreak of covid-19.

Your job is to track what date, what platform, and what exactly you liked or posted to social media or how you used the internet. Considering most of us spend 3+ hours on our phones per day, this is no small feat.

However, do your best to remember to log your “movement”. The more honest and accurate you are, the more you will get out of this assignment. *Reminder - the internet can be a vast wasteland...please remain appropriate in the actions that you log.

Peer Edit a Classmate -- SOAPSTone in Google Classroom

Peer Edit a Classmate -- SOAPSTone

I highly encourage you all to find a peer (preferably in our class but anyone will do) to edit your essay via SOAPSTone. All the seniors in English IV and AP have had exposure to SOAPSTone. However, I would never require you to share such personal writing, so if you want to opt out of this you will not be penalized.

You should have already SOAPSTone'd your own essay and turned that in on Google Classroom. Both of these activities are to encourage true revision and not just editing. Revision is structurally and organizationally and thoughtfully changing your essay. Editing is making sure your grammar and syntax is correct. WE ARE REVISING and EDITING...

Take the period to either complete your SOAPSTone for your essay (turn it in by the end of class) or find a peer to SOAPSTone with or stop by the google meet attached for some guidance from me in a smaller group setting. I will have both our large and this google meet open to offer help vocally or in the chat.

**You will notice that the DUE DATE is Wednesday end of day but the sooner the better because the essay is due on Friday and you need time to revise after this is completed**
