Tues 6/1: The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas

Here is the entire short story (which we'll read together first), then the part we're going to analyze a bit closer.  That section is in an editable doc so you can annotate easily.

Due:

EXTRA CREDIT: Implicit Bias Tests in Google Classroom

EXTRA CREDIT: Implicit Bias Tests

For extra credit, you can take 1 or more of the Implicit Bias Tests at the link below.  Submit a screenshot showing that you are done (see example attached) - if you prefer, you can cut off the part that describes your results, and just include the part that says "You have completed the study" and the line underneath with the name of the test.

Then write a couple sentences letting me know how you felt about the test and the results you got.  If the results make you uncomfortable for any reason, you don't have to share them - just your overall impressions and reaction.

Due:

Thurs 5/27: Edpuzzle - Prejudice & Discrimination in Google Classroom

Thurs 5/27: Edpuzzle - Prejudice & Discrimination

Mon 5/24: Upload language evidence, complete final reflection

Please submit this assignment after BOTH of the following tasks are complete:

1. Write a final reflection in your language portfolio (on your IB CP portfolio google site).  This need to include:

your final hour count (remember, Duolingo XP / 120 = hours; you also got 3 additional hours in class)
commentary on how it went overall and what you feel like you learned
a new analysis of what phase you are in (from 1 to 6)... and specifically identify which areas you improved in from where you started.  The basic phase chart is attached below.  The more detailed version is on pages 17-22 of the attached pdf.
2. Upload evidence that you have achieved a minimum of 50 hours.  If you used a variety of methods (Duolingo, videos with notes, tutoring, etc.) upload something related to each category.  You do NOT need evidence for the 3 hours we accomplish in class together - I'm verifying those.

Be sure to hit PUBLISH after you do all those, so that it's visible to anyone viewing your portfolio!

Due:

Please answer this 4-question survey about language development.

Finish your Reflective project - based on the checklist and the feedback you got
Do your citations and works cited/bibliography (or footnotes)
Turn it in on TurnItIn.com (make sure you used the "rough draft" submission area)

2 ideas you found most interesting
1 question you have or part of the article you might disagree with

Due:

Mon 3/8: next language reflection in Google Classroom

Mon 3/8: next language reflection

You will write this reflection in your IBCP Portfolio, on the Language Development page.
(Remember, you can find this by doing a search in your Drive for only "sites" - or under "starred" if you starred it before.)

In this reflection, please consider the following:
* What have you learned about the culture of the societies who speak this language? (If nothing - how can you try to learn something now? It's an important consideration, and one that might not be covered in Duolingo alone.)
* Looking at the language phases, are you still in the same phase where you started, or has anything changed? (see the attached pdf, page 15-16, for the phases)
* Set some specific goals for progress by mid-May, based on the descriptors. (See the attached pdf, page 17-22, for ideas. The objectives are things you can do by the end of your phase, when you're ready to level up. Find your current phase, and then identify some objectives you'd like to accomplish by May to show you have progressed.)

All of this goes directly into your IB CP portfolio site. Don't attach anything here, but "turn in" or "mark as done" when you're finished.

Due:

Wed 3/3: Source Scavenger Hunt in Google Classroom

Wed 3/3: Source Scavenger Hunt

Today we're going on a google scavenger hunt. I want you to choose a topic (related to your Reflective Project if possible, though not required) - and then look at different references and research sources about that topic. Select one that seems credible (believable, unbiased, accurate, based on legitimate evidence) and explain why you think that's true. Then select one that seems unreliable (inaccurate, sketchy, biased, opinionated, or from a total non-expert) and explain how you can tell that.

To do this, make a copy of the slide template in the attached slide deck, and fill in with your examples.

Due:

Thurs 2/18: True for Who?

Once you have a draft research question, use this graphic organizer to consider the possible perspectives on it.

Remember, there need to be 2 or more legitimate perspectives, and every possible answer to the ethical dilemma has problems. You don't need to have 4 viewpoints, but try to figure out 3 or 4 if you can. As you begin to research your question, you might also discover other viewpoints then.

Due:

Wed 2/10: language question in Google Classroom

Wed 2/10: language question

Please answer this question with 3 pieces of information:
a) how many language hours you have*
b) what evidence/proof you have of that
c) for any evidence besides Duolingo XP, is that currently in your IB CP Portfolio, language development page?

*If using Duolingo, take your XP and divide by 2, then divide by 60 = hours. If you use Duolingo AND other things, add those hours together. EVERYONE can add 3 hours for work we have done in class that is not captured in your other evidence.

Due:

Fri 12/4: Describe your current ethics for an appropriate society.

Due:

Mon 11/23: Duolingo assignments (and ASL) in Google Classroom

Mon 11/23: Duolingo assignments (and ASL)

There is a new 75 XP assignment in Duolingo, due on Mon 11/30. Please complete this and also any old assignments that you missed - all have been reopened until 11/30. When done, click "Mark as Done" here. Remember, you need 50 hours of language development which equates to around 6000 XP points - so you need to keep up with our assignments to be on track! If you have time, please go ahead and do more Duolingo lessons on your own.

ASL learners: please complete 30 minutes to 1 hour of study of ASL. In your language portfolio, make a note of what lessons you did (i.e. which videos, or which app modules) and how long you spent on it. Since we cannot track you in Duolingo, you will need to keep track of your evidence this way.

OVERALL, you need to spend about 8 hours a month (or 2 hours a week) on language development. Some of this is done in class, but some of it is up to you.

Due:

Mon 11/23: Group company norms and values in Google Classroom

A structure for the assignment can be found in the slides linked below. You should make a copy of the file, OR create your own template (using SlidesGO, SlidesCarnival or SlidesMania) and then model the slide content and structure off of this one. Copy the share link and put it in the spreadsheet, in the column for your group (and ADD ME as an editor!)

Due:

Mon 11/16: Language and cultural norms/values in Google Classroom

Mon 11/16: Language and cultural norms/values

Today we'll continue our exploration of cultural norms and values, while also thinking about language development. (And first, we'll make sure our language portfolios are organized.) Please follow these steps to get started:

1. Find your language portfolio (in your google drive) and rename it "Language Portfolio - your name" (i.e. "Language Portfolio - Elizabeth Kelley").
2. Open your language portfolio and make sure that what's already in there is labeled. You should have a "Language & Culture Profile" and "Reflection #1" which is hopefully also dated.
3. Add today's entry with a title like "Language and thinking" and today's date.
4. Read the article linked below, which explains how language can shape the way someone thinks. I also linked a forum that includes some interesting examples, but that one is optional.
5. Google/research the language you are learning to see what's unique about it, that might shape how people who speak this language think or view the world. This might be hard to find answers to immediately, but keep looking. You might started by searching "how language shapes thinking" + the name of your language.
6. Complete today's journal entry: Summarize the main point of the article attached below. Add what you found about the language you are studying, and how its structure or vocabulary might influence the way people who speak this language speak. Compare this to your main language(s) that you already speak, to show the differences.
7. Click "mark as done" here to indicate that you are finished.

Once you are finished, please do the following:
-Answer the "written reflection" question dated 11/12, if you did not already submit this.
-Complete the assigned Duolingo for today (or for ASL learners - watch a video or do the next lesson in whatever platform you are using).

Due:

Thurs 11/12: Written reflection in Google Classroom

Thurs 11/12: Written reflection

Through the affinity group comparisons and our discussions with the jamboard, we have taken a look at some differences between cultures and where they come from. We also saw this a bit in the "Lost Boys" clip about men who moved from Sudan to the USA. As you think more about differences in cultural norms and values, and why they exist...

A. What are your thoughts about how to approach others who act or value things differently from you?
B. How should knowledge like this inform the way workplaces function?
C. What is your current opinion on how to tell if someone's belief or action is "right" vs "wrong"?

Earlier this week, you chose 1 goal to focus on and outlined 3 steps to work on it. How is all of that going so far?

In your response, please include what stage you think you're in on the attached chart (which visualizes the typical reactions to a change process) regarding the changes that come with remote learning vs regular in-person school.

Due:

Tues 10/13: Whole Week At A Glance in Google Classroom

Tues 10/13: Whole Week At A Glance

Use your schedule you've been working with so far (currently attached to the assignment from last Thursday). We will add some final considerations today, to take the whole week into account:

1. Add a section for weekends (or re-draft the whole week, if you prefer).
2. Consider how to best use your weekends: is this time to catch-up on work? To get ahead on work or do some planning? Do you need a full day without any school work or screen time?
3. Throughout your week, identify the times where you are meeting your needs (which you established on last Wednesday's assignment). Insert times if they don't already exist.
4. Look through and consider if times should be made more specific. (Like, should you set aside 30 minutes every school day to JUST talk to friends and be on social media? Instead of doing it all day long while it interferes with your work?) Mark those changes as needed.
5. Note any areas that look like they'll continue to be a problem or which you don't have an idea for yet. We'll come back to those after we try the changes you DO have brainstormed already.

Your final product should represent an "ideal" week where you keep up with the demands on you, but also meet your needs and reduce stress. I realize this may not be realistic in all cases, but it's important to consider what would be best if it were possible. ATTACH THE FINISHED DOCUMENT HERE.

Then, choose 1 of your 2 goals to focus on and list 3 CONCRETE, SPECIFIC steps you will take to meet it (which you basically have already figured out in doing these schedule additions). Submit those through the form linked below (but don't forget to separately attach your week schedule doc too, or upload a pic).

Due:

Wed 10/14: course topics for the year in Google Classroom

Wed 10/14: course topics for the year

I'm revising our course outline for the year as part of a training I'm currently enrolled in. Please let me know what specific social issues and/or career-related issues you would like us to consider. The 5 themes for the course are: Personal Development, Intercultural Understanding, Effective Communication, Thinking Processes and Applied Ethics. We can consider those themes in a variety of topics, so I'm very open to suggestions!

Some ideas might include: why people see things so differently from each other (i.e. BLM, Covid response, politics), how to approach ethical dilemmas that come up in life and at work, creative thinking about how the world could/should operate after Covid, etc.

Thurs 10/8: Mantra, goals and schedule as-is in Google Classroom

Thurs 10/8: Mantra, goals and schedule as-is

On paper (or electronic, if you prefer)
1. choose or write a mantra for yourself. This is a motivating phrase that you can repeat when making changes or dealing with things gets tough.
2. set 2-3 specific goals for things you want to improve (YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO THIS AFTER THE SCHEDULE. I DID.)
3. map out your current schedule - times, what you're doing then, and what kind of mood you are in (plus your engagement/focus level and any distractions worth noting)

Add some personal touches or things that make you feel positive - doodles and sketches, emojis or gifs.

Attached your electronic work, or take a picture of your paper work and upload that.

My version is attached as an example. I did the mantra, then the schedule, and that helped me realize what my goals should be.

You may enter a breakout room if you would like to collaborate with others (although this is a fairly personal assignment). Add your name to the google sheet and then enter the room.

Wed 9/30: Collage gallery walk in Google Classroom

Wed 9/30: Collage gallery walk

Answer the questions using specific examples from your or other student collages. If you are working on one device and need to see the collages while answering, you can do this on paper and just upload a pic (or type it later - but no need to spend time doing that if your pic is legible).

Due:

Wed 9/23: Identity Collage in Google Classroom

Wed 9/23: Identity Collage

Create a collage that addresses the question “Who I Am?” You can do this with actual materials and upload a photo, or use a medium such a Adobe Spark (https://spark.adobe.com/sp/) to create a digital collage.

Use the results from the Left Brain vs Right Brain Survey, Personality Quiz, and 16 Personalities Survey to complete your collage. Your collage is a collection of visuals (pictures, photos, illustrations, cartoons, and drawings) and text (quotes, testimonials, excerpts, and prose) that communicate to your audience who you are. Present your visuals and text in a manner that is easy to read, follow, and navigate. Place your name/picture in the center of your collage, and the rest of the surface should be covered with visuals and text. Add color to communicate mood and tone.

Below are several questions and topics you should address in your collage:
 Full name
 Hobbies and extracurricular activities
 Ethnicity/race/culture
 My family/traditions
 Most memorable recent event
 Accomplishment I am proud of
 Places I would like to visit/explore
 Social media
 Food
 Future career choice
 Favorite childhood memory
 What I would change in this world
 Favorite TV show/movie
 Favorite sport/team
 I would like to …
 I never want to …
 Favorite academic subject/class
 Add your own: _________________________________________________________

Remember there is no “correct” way to complete your collage. Add visuals, text, and color and communicate who you are by addressing the majority of topics/questions listed above. Be prepared to share your collage in class with your peers. Good luck.

Fri 9/18: Final journal reflection on IB Learner Profile traits in Google Classroom

Fri 9/18: Final journal reflection on IB Learner Profile traits

Find the next blank page in the Personal Development section of your journal. (If it's the last blank page, be sure to right-click and Duplicate Slide before using it... and update page numbers for new slides.) Copy the following questions in, and then answer them. Feel free to reformat and use additional pages to make this fit and be easy-to-read.

How was the process of communicating and working with your group on this activity? (What went well, what didn't...)

How happy are you with the overall product you created? Why?

Would you do anything differently if you were doing this again? (Explain your answer, whether it's yes or no.)

If you had been asked to focus on a high school senior, instead of a fourth-grader, what would you have done differently? (Be specific.)

If you had been asked to focus on remote learning, instead of in-person class, what would you have done differently? (Be specific.)

Based on the share-outs from all groups and your experiences so far:
- What are 2 things you are already doing well in the remote learning environment?
- What are 2 things for you to improve on, within the remote learning environment?

PPS Digital Journal in Google Classroom

PPS Digital Journal

Please put your name on the front cover of your journal, the navigate to Page 2-3 of the Personal Development section (slides 4-5) to insert a picture of your Learner Profile trait poster and complete a reflection activity. If you need ideas or tips on inserting media, check out the last page of the journal. You can add text boxes or type into my text boxes to answer questions, but I would also like you try to adding audio clips, video, images, etc. If you have time to try those today, please go ahead and try adding them. If not, you'll need to attempt to incorporate each at some point in this unit (FYI).

Fri 9/11: Who's Who Bingo in Google Classroom

Fri 9/11: Who's Who Bingo

Open up the Who's Who slides we created earlier this week (accessible via Tuesday's assignment). Scroll through the slides in order to find names for each square on this modified BINGO card. We'll start a timer for 10 minutes to try to complete the entire card. May the odds be ever in your favor...

Due:

Wed 9/9: Learner Profile poster in Google Classroom

Wed 9/9: Learner Profile poster

Create a poster about yourself, highlighting the 3 Learner Profile traits you feel that you most embody. (If you're rusty on the Learner Profile, there are resource links below to help you). Put your name in the center of the poster, then use the remaining space to explore the 3 traits. For each one:
1. Name the trait
2. Briefly describe what it means in your own words
3. Represent the trait with an image or symbol (draw or find on the web)
4. Connect to the trait with a personal example

You can use any modality you would like for the poster, as long as you are able to attach it here to turn it in. Suggestions:
*one google slide with different text boxes and images layered onto it
*a google drawing
*a jamboard
*another software program that you can save as a pdf or jpeg (like Paint)
*create on actual paper, then take a picture and upload that (just make sure it's high-res so I can read your stuff!)
*other... if you have a different idea, I'm open to it as long as it works for what I'm asking you to do, and you can turn it in here

You have 2 options for attaching your work:
1. Create the work from here by clicking the "Add or create" button on the upper right, and then opening up the google app you plan to use. It will automatically be attached to the assignment when you go to hit "Turn In"
2. Create the work separately, and upload later. When it's time to submit, you'll need to click "Add or Create" and then link it from your Google Drive (the triangle icon) or hit File to upload a separate thing. Do not scroll down to create a new doc or other file if you've already made it... pick Google Drive and find your work.

See the gif on this page if you don't know what I'm talking about: https://alicekeeler.com/2020/05/01/google-classroom-submit-button/. I'll also be in the Google Meet while you work, or accessible via email later, if you need assistance.

Due:

Tues 9/8: Who's Who in PPS

Please open the slide deck and COPY the template slide. Then, fill out your copy about yourself so that I (Ms. Kelley) and your classmates get to know a little more about you. Once these are in, we'll take a look at a few each day and give you each a chance to get us caught up on how you're doing.
