hello Junior Bobcats and welcome to another awesome get very unique year at boy CP so this is a recording of this week's Junior student orientation can you hear me okay can you send me okay I hope the answer is yes because this is a recording so we cannot communicate in movies hi so here we go this is your junior year I hope you're as excited as I am we are home or the near future but this is still your junior year it's obviously a super important year it's your last year making a positive influence on Your Grave the transcript before applying to college you end up like me you only have a couple more years at home with Mom and family before you go to college and possibly never really move back home I'm so here we go Junior orientation school expectations for virtual learning so attendance is going to be crucial crucial crucial you are attending school it's not like in the springtime where things we're up in the air and we were trying to figure it out everyday and every class is super important you should all have your schedules and you do have to follow that schedule every day you have to show up to class your teachers will be live okay so they'll be taking attendance and teaching you live as if we were in school except we'll be virtual so tell me something taken for every class. Missing one class is like missing half a day's super big deal missing two classes send a fake being absent so please make sure to be present in every single class like we said attendance will be taken in each of those academics so teachers will have live life Davide so just like again like we were in school right your teachers are going to be some of them over working from school from your classroom some of them will be home but they're going to be live we're going to be in a normal grading scale so it's not like the springtime where you can get a pass p r a knife running complete none of that okay we're going back to I know I'm already still let it be given for completed work so you really want to make sure you get the best grades possible not completely work is risking receiving of 0 and feeling the class you all should know at this point that any zero on your on your grave the great book is like an anchor right it's really hard to bring up and it's really hard to keep moving full why is it if you have zeros on your Gradebook if you did receive an eye for incomplete or an s in the spring semester then you will have to make up that that class and you should definitely reach out and email me or any of the counseling staff to make sure that we get you enrolled in a in a night class during this fall semester and that class would also be virtual but we definitely want you to make up that credit the sooner the better being an active student rights only talk about expectations for virtual learning out what it what does it mean to be an active student we need you to be present we really really really really do everything you cannot to use an avatar and you know that's like sending in like a substitute for yourself into class so you know trying to wake up early enough to get some breakfast you know it's going to take a shower to get you some you know Mason awake to that but get yourself ready you know not only mentally but physically okay be in your classes Daily Show your teachers that you're invested in you care about your learning I'm telling you there's nothing like logging on to orientation and and seeing all of you having any see you guys have your cameras on but also knowing that you are seeing me right that we're seeing each other feels really good to see you all but I was have you seen the join Google classroom for each of the classes make sure you're actively participating not only in in the whole class but also if you guys have breakout smaller groups interactive activities anything's better teacher put together even if it's a right make sure you participate get into it check your email and respond to emails from your teachers and staff from school as quickly as possible okay just like we try to do all right I know it's hard but I can give you the important that we continue to communicate give me in thank you communicate and over communicate and advocate for yourself okay this is really really important because as you get ready to go to college College can be overwhelming but that the the better you are in the more used to asking for help you are the better going to do in college all right in college you might have a large classroom even if you're a small College students who like today and talk to professors after class they tend to do better okay those students attend to go to office hours and go to the writing lab to ask for help they tend to do better okay so definitely communicate and advocates for stuff be open-minded okay this is this is different this is nothing that I experience at the high school student in your parents my parents grandparents like nobody's done this right this way we're the first ones to be open-minded and and give it your all and give it a shot and have fun and and work hard and learn all right speaking of having a positive attitude having that positive attitude is going to help us get through all of this all right some things that point out we do have a short commute to school right I can literally Wake Up Now 15 minutes before and make it to work on time because I like having my coffee and I like showering morning but we do have a short commute to school so that's great this is also a great opportunity to strengthen your organization of both space and time so it might be the first time that you actually like thinking about world where am I going to be my schooling everyday is it in my room is it at the kitchen table and see if if if you can you know set set that face up and you know organize yourself ahead of time you get school supplies ready I have everything that you need handy the future of work is also looking more and more like you learning with many careers offering adults the flexibility to work from home so I'm at both my wife and I are you know I professor you know she works in the healthcare field so she has to continue to go into work where I can I have the option of going to work at the school and communicate with you off in the building or I can do it have been right now and work from home a lot more people are being given this flexibility to not ever go back into the office okay so you know something to think about working from home you have more flexibility to meet with teachers with me are the counselors with study groups okay it's a lot easier to do that because we don't have to travel we don't have to wait we don't have to worry about it getting dark outside we don't have to worry about you not taking the bus after a club meeting or study group shut the laptop off these days it's like this it's just like this my older my older son is going into a sophomore year and all of his classes this fall are virtual just like yours so this is a very much a very good preparation for college because I think even after the pain down back after Cove is there are still going to be a lot of College Park University classes that will continue to be offered online and at the end of the day guess what again short commute back home right 8. Is over you don't have to worry about going take the bus you not to worry about walking in the rain and the snow snow this early in the year but you know what I mean tips for you all at virtual Learners have a designated area for school work Saturday and I talked about earlier choose a quiet area that allows you to be comfortable focus and have some privacy I know it's hard sometimes you know depending on where we live but as much as possible try and give yourself a try try and talk family about where you think is going to be best for you to be in school while being at home choose an area that has a desk or a table or counter with a comfy chair and proper lighting so so your teacher I see you clearly alright again having a camera on is going to be really important make sure to have the proper materials keep your area stocked with supplies like your computer charger obviously the computer headphones water for snacks whatever it is that you need to be successful through this you know think about it and adapt right get yourself ready for Tuesday you know do it on Wednesday is that felt right keep doing it if you feel like something's missing change it up definitely stay organized create a calendar to stay organized at 10 classes on time and complete assignments in a timely manner use your Google calendar I can't stress it enough especially as you get older definitely want to depend a little bit less unlike Britain agendas and Warren Moore I'm your your electronic calendar okay that connect to your phone they look at reminders it really helps you say organ you can label physical folders and your electronic folders to keep materials in a safe and organized place okay so again really take advantage to you to keep yourself and like organized user resources right so connect again with teachers with me with other counselors supports that to make connections and ask for help connect your classmates to create study groups Church groups are even Hangouts after school if you if you never join the club Join one right it's never been easier to like step into a meeting and just see what the club is about check the school website email and Google Classroom daily make sure you're staying informed right against a positive change can be difficult but staying positive can help us get through this everything you learned will help you grow and you will we will all get through this and we're here to help some ways that I can help along with the rest of the counseling team are we can provide academic support like communicating with teachers if you feel like you need some help communicating with a feature that you feel like it might be a little bit intimidating or whatever reason we can help relation in Sign Language minutes 30 skills goal setting we can provide social and emotional support like individual counseling groups psycho-education we know that many people have gone through a pretty hard time these last few months some of us have had family members in the hospital all this event has passed away I was a lot of things have been going on outside of our doors and the streets and in our city and our country so if you feel like you need just in time a space to talk to ask questions to to listen to somebody else's ideas and interviews you know let us know where it what we're here to help and support College and Career Readiness we can help with search goal setting financial aid and scholarships and selection and future planning of course all right we're going to do this together important info for you all to parent meetings and and student on house where you know this year we're going to be discussing how you can can and should continue to use Khan Academy to help prepare you for the SAT that you will be taking in the spring alright we are working on getting you a more PSAT it looks like in the fall and more information to come on that but you're definitely taking the sat in the spring so continue to use Khan Academy to prepare continue to prepare for colleges by using your Naviance account I'm telling you what time is your Tick Tock your your Snapchat your Facebook Naviance of your friend we're going to be doing some virtual college tours and crit in college list so by the end of junior year you should have a nice healthy College list that isn't that isn't right match either those those schools are a good match for you and your academic profile continuous mental health check ins we have to support each other to this I can't say it enough alright whether it's during lunch after school we have to keep coming being with each other take advantage of possible enrichment programs at College possible the Posse scholarship and other work programs that will become available to use senior year so you should already have your schedule but just a quick note and reminder that this year are Juniors and seniors have mixed lunch so you might actually get to hang out when we go back to school not only with somebody jr. friends but what you seen your friends and this is the first year that we've had this Lisa far as I've seen since I've been here so you might have 4th. Lunch and you might have six. Lunch but the bell schedule is the same every week day Monday through Thursday okay it'll be the same no more special weeks no more start on Thursdays or anything like that this is the schedule Monday through Thursday I have no matter what so you don't even start the passing. Between classes even though where it where online every Friday now is an advisory Friday okay there's no sometimes yes and sometimes no every single Friday we have advisory which is great I really hope that you're starting to open up to your classmates an advisory to your advisory teachers because it it's your time to really build a strong community in a family and identity okay so every Friday this isn't schedule the really really nice thing is that every Friday were done by 2:16 alright so we're done. the earlier Turning Point financial aid information that you you could just you know run by your parents I will be talking about this with them at our first parent you know parent parent night upcoming taxes that they're going to do in in the winter most parent most families do taxes like in the end of January or February sometimes into March these upcoming taxes that they do are going to be the that you use to apply to college and apply for financial aid okay so we just want to make sure it's super important that they file correctly and I'll be going over with them what it means to file correctly and and and what it means to make a mistake can really harm the opportunity for you to get financial aid after you to get financial aid on time okay the majority of scholarships awarded to actually come from the college directly because University directly and the NBA are awarded both based on financial aid financial need that you that that comes out as a result of faster or on your desk or that kind of thing alright so we want to make sure we get this right just a quick reminder that we're still at like this is still school you know that is a clock keeps ticking and you really want to fight to be as competitive as Honda Civic CVT chart okay remember everybody's on here right so no matter what your going to college if that's what you want if that's what you want for your luck for your future and your life you going to go to college right but if you want you know more and more competitive and I want more options you definitely want to make your way to the top right of this chart okay so hopefully this last spring semester you remove did UPA some from left to right in and hopefully with your test score right will be able to to to be to be where you want to be as well you know I think I've shown you all this hurt before but again if you really were well paying for college you want to pay attention to the GPA okay because the more competitive and especially the more expensive universities that a lot of people get intimidated to apply to because they're so expensive though schools 10 offer the most in financial aid okay so again you really want to work work work your butt off this year to be able to you know put yourself in a good situation that only in terms of getting into schools but then being able to pay for them as well okay so if you have any questions at this time because of the video I can't answer them in real-time but you can email me and you will have my email it say I realized cps.edu so please feel free to reach out to reach out and let me know what's up what's up I'm happy to meet with you all individually with your parents we can set up a video conference for we can talk to each other through here or I can just give you a call on the phone that we can talk that way as well alright thank you very much for watching I hope I didn't startle you with my but I have a great year and I'm here for you whatever you need all right
