English A:Literature HL (Year 1)

Hello! Welcome to an incredible two year immersion into literature across the world. We will grow in our ability to read and process a text and apply that information to make new and personal knowledge. The anchor texts this year include Jhumpa Lahiri's novel The Namesake, Edmond Rostand's famous tragicomedic drama Cyrano de Bergerac, a set of selected short stories by Anton Chekhov, a set of selected poems by Carol Ann Duffy, Henrik Ibsen's drama A Doll's House, Khalil Gibran's book of prose-poetry fables The Prophet, and a biography by Jeff Hobbs titled The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace. We will also cover a wide variety of other material that will serve to help us comprehend what we are reading. I often find that it is only through thinking about multiple perspectives that I can develop my own, so we will do that here. We will also prepare you for the SAT- this is a national test that has implications for you beyond your world at BOYCP. While the world of standardized testing is in flux, I still want to arm you will the capability of mastering the written word and thus doing well on any type of assessment you may be presented with in life. Lastly, we will be utilizing the full Google G suite in class. It is my hope that a virtual education will still feel personal to you and that the class is rewarding. Please always reach out to me with any questions- I am here to help. While I take my job seriously I also aim to thoroughly our time together and I hope you do as well!
